Media Management

Media Management

Media Management has historically referred to the wide spectrum of mass communication business like radio, film, music, TV, newspapers, and magazines. Today technology is rapidly transforming communication due to the public’s mass adoption of smart phones, tablets, gaming, social networks, and high-speed Internet connections.

The evolution of technology continues to create new platforms for communication and entertainment. These platforms are also constantly converging to make the user experience more dynamic. Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, Xbox, iPhone, iPad, and Android phones are examples of the media products combining music, TV, film, and gaming to make this content readily available to a user on their television, phone, tablet and beyond.

These exciting new media technologies have reinvented the way all media companies operate, and they are eager to hire smart young minds who are comfortable with this technology as managers. The Media Management concentration prepares students to fill these emerging roles as top executives in traditional and new media.

Not only are large media companies evolving, but also hundreds of small media start up companies are born every day out of innovative ideas for a new product like a television series, film, magazine, phone application, or a website. These ideas depend on the leadership skills of young entrepreneurs to make them successful. Our Media Management concentration is dedicated to providing these skills to students to be entrepreneurs and leaders in media, and exciting start up companies like Groupon, Google, Threadless, Grubhub, and Razorfish are right down the street from our campus with an array of internship opportunities and job openings. Students are also encouraged to take courses in other Columbia College departments offering media production in film, video, interactive television, graphic design, animation and radio to complement their management classes.
