BFA Programs

BFA programs are offered across the spectrum of professional art and design disciplines.

The Fine Arts degree offers the opportunity to explore in 2-D, 3-D, and 4-D. Faculty consists of masters in painting/drawing, printmaking, sculpture, metals, ceramics, new-media, installation, and performance art. The philosophy stresses strong technical skills, firm grounding in conceptualization and art criticism, the need for work to be socially interactive, and to foster an environment where students can explore all of the opportunities available to develop their personal voice and vision.

The Advertising Art Direction, Graphic Design, and Illustration programs boast faculty that are some of the most experienced practitioners in the business, and who are connected to some of the most important advertising firms in the world. Their understanding of design emphasizes content as well as technology, realizing the social and aesthetic impact of popular culture. Students will develop their graphic sensibilities with both traditional and digital technologies. Students can also take advantage of opportunities to collaborate with Photography and Marketing majors on professional campaigns and contests.

The Product Design program is one of the most innovative, contemporary programs in the country. From User-Research Techniques and Interface Design to Advanced Computer Modeling and Fabrication, students immerse themselves in the cutting edge of creative problem solving and the consumer culture of the future. Students will learn the necessary skills to perform in one of the most exciting design careers offered today.

Fashion Design is a program designed to help students succeed in this challenging, creative, and exciting field. All aspects of pattern making, construction, and tailoring are covered in depth. A thorough understanding of the history and influence of fashion on culture is learned in the classroom, as well as through visits to the Fashion Study Collection, which holds over 2,000 garments and provides primary study of clothes and accessories. The capstone is the Fashion Columbia Senior Fashion Show Extravaganza, a joint project with the Arts, Entertainment and Media Management Department.

The Interior Architecture program explores traditional, contemporary, and historical issues within the context of current social needs and mandates. Emphasis is placed on the development of language and vocabulary to resolve and implement appropriate responses to diverse institutional design problems. Our integrated approach will ensure students are adept in both the manual and computer skills needed for effective participation as a practitioner in a professional architectural or design firm.
