Kumiko is originally from Osaka, Japan. She earned a Fashion degree at Marronior Fashion Design College, Osaka and worked as a fashion designer for Christian Aujard Homme, Itokin Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. She moved to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) and received her BFA and MFA in Painting and Drawing from SAIC. She was a resident artist at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2003. Prior to her current position at Columbia College, she worked as an exhibition preparator at the Field Museum and graphics installer for the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her artwork, mainly painting, sculpture and installation, represents her perspective of peoples' obsession with the season of spring and especially the flowers that bloom along with it. Kumiko has exhibited locally and nationally.
