Lara double-majored in Latin American Studies and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin and has worked in a series of community-based nonprofit arts organizations. Her professional background includes work in development and marketing, education outreach, event planning, board relations, budgeting, copywriting, and project management.  Since moving to her birth city of Chicago, she has been working in Columbia's Art + Design department as a liaison to full-time faculty where she helps coordinate the A+D Lecture Series program, edits the A+D website, organizes and promotes the department’s news from faculty, staff, and students, and oversees the administrative budget.  She is also a dedicated hospice volunteer and enjoys reading, writing, headstands, rhubarb, and playing with fireworks.
