Art History

Art History is an exciting new concentration within the Art + Design Department at Columbia College. Students can earn either a Bachelor of Arts in Art History or choose a Minor in Art History to complement a variety of major fields. Unlike art history programs at other colleges, ours has a greater emphasis on fields of study outside of the traditional canon of art history, thus reflecting both the interests of our students and new directions in the discipline of art history itself. Art history students at Columbia can specialize in one of four areas: history of modern and contemporary art, history of non-western art, history of design, and history of photography. These areas open up the study of art history beyond its usual focus on Euro-American fine art traditions and reflect the multi-cultural, inclusive, and interdisciplinary nature of art and art history today.

The basic skills of art history ? analyzing visual elements and relating art to its historical and cultural contexts ? have become potent tools for understanding our world as it becomes increasingly dependent upon visual media. These skills prepare students for a wide variety of professional opportunities or for further graduate study, whether in art history, other fields of the arts and humanities, journalism, or management. Graduates with a B.A. in Art History typically pursue art-related careers in museums and art galleries, as well as teaching, art criticism and publishing, art conservation, historic preservation, arts management, and cultural advocacy.
