Summer Dance Workshops:
June 2-12, Jan Erkert*
Pedagogy Workshop
Mon.-Thurs., 1:00-4:00pm

This workshop is an in-depth inquiry into teaching technique for professional level dance teachers, based on Ms. Erkert's book, Harnessing the Wind, the Art of Teaching Modern Dance. The workshop explores the relationship between choreographic research and teaching; developing and expanding a point of view; using goals to enhance performance; incorporating somatic and conditioning principles into a technique class; and developing a sequence for class material that supports movement learning. There will also be a daily round table to discuss and share ideas about our ongoing investigations into best practices for teaching dance.
* Jan Erkert will also teach Modern Technique III, June 2- 12

Workshop requirements:
Dance Center students: Teaching I
Non DC students: at least one year of teaching experience

June 16-19, Victoria Marks
Choreographing Democracy
Mon. - Thurs., 1:00-4:00pm

In the shadow of the upcoming election, this class looks at the body, and the ways bodies, in motion together, are the material from which democracy is built. This class serves as a creative laboratory for examining ways dancing and dancemaking locates itself within the sphere of political meaning. Students will explore ideas about power, justice, privacy and responsibility through the creation of choreographic and improvisational structures. Bring your sense of humor, expect to have lots of fun, and plan on stirring up some trouble!

Workshop requirements:
Dance Center students:  Dancemaking I & Modern III or Modern II
Non DC students: TBD

June 23-26, Michelle Kranicke & Emily Stein, of Zephyr Dance
Arts Integration Teaching Training
Mon. - Thurs., 1:00-4:00pm

Zephyr Dance's workshop, led by Artistic Director Michelle Kranicke and Associate Artistic Director Emily Stein, is designed to give undergraduate students as well as professional teaching artists a platform to experience and practice rigorous arts integrated practice. This 12-hour training workshop will give participants experience integrating modern dance with math, language arts, social studies and science curricula. Participants will be introduced to academic standards, strategies for working in a variety of grade levels and for building a template based on a model that includes teacher planning, classroom practice, project assessment and documentation.

Workshop requirements:
DC Students: Teaching I
Non DC students: resume detailing past teaching experience

Jan Erkert is a dancemaker, author and Head of the Department of Dance at University of Illinois. As Artistic Director of Jan Erkert & Dancers from 1979 - 2000, she created over 70 works, critically acclaimed for their lush, evocative imagery. Ms. Erkert's work has been seen throughout the United States as well as in Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, Uruguay and Israel. Ms. Erkert and the company have been honored with numerous awards including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council, and Ruth Page Awards for choreography and performance. She has received two Fulbright Scholar Awards and served on the Fulbright panel. Throughout her career she has devoted much of her energy to advancing teaching and learning. She authored Harnessing the Wind: The Art of Teaching Modern Dance, which was published in 2003 by Human Kinetics and she has been a master teacher at universities and colleges throughout the United States, Mexico, Europe and Asia. As a professor of dance at Columbia College Chicago from 1990-2006, she garnered many awards including the 1999 Excellence in Teaching Award, and a nominee for the U.S. Professor of the Year sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation. Her political and community work includes partnerships with the Kovler Center for Survivors of Torture, The Peace Museum and Amnesty International.

Victoria Marks creates dances for the stage, for film and in community settings.Marks' recent work has considered the politics of citizenship, as well as the representation of both virtuosity and disability. These themes are part of her ongoing commitment to locating dancemaking within the sphere of political meaning. Marks is a Professor of choreography in the Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA where she has been teaching since 1995. She is a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow and has received recent grants from the Irvine Foundation (Dance: Creation to Performance 2004 and DanceMaker 2002), the NEA (2005) and the Cultural Affairs Council (COLA 2001). In 1997, Marks was honored with the Alpert Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography. Over the course of her career, she has been the recipient of multiple grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, The New York Foundation for the Arts, and the London Arts Board, among others. She has received a Fulbright Fellowship in Choreography, and numerous awards for her dance films, including the Grand Prix in the Video Danse Festival (1996 and 1995), the Golden Antenae Award from Bulgaria, the IMZ Award for best screen choreography and the Best of Show in the Dance Film.

Michelle Kranicke has been teaching dance to children, teens, adults and senior citizens of all levels for ten years. In addition to teaching the traditional forms of ballet and modern Michelle has developed classes for all dance levels that draw on participants' creativity to give students a more meaningful dance experience. She is an instructor in the LEAP project, helping to integrate the arts into the Chicago Public School system's core curriculum to give students exciting, new, creative ways of learning. In 2000, because of her extensive work teaching arts integrated education Michelle was invited as guest artist to speak about the advances of arts integrated education in Chicago at the International Conference on Educating Cities, in Lisbon, Portugal. In 1996, she began a comprehensive community outreach program entitled Dance is for EveryBODY at Chicago's Holstein Park under the auspices of the Chicago Park District's Arts Partners in Residence Program. She has been a guest artist and lecturer at Illinois Wesleyan University, Eastern Illinois University, and Ohio Wesleyan University and conducted residencies and taught master classes in modern dance in Chicago and throughout the Midwest.

Emily Stein began dancing and choreographing with Zephyr Dance in 1993 and became Associate Artistic Director in 1997. Both independently and with Zephyr, her work has been presented at many Chicago venues, as well as throughout the country. Her choreography has been seen in New York City at the Mulberry Street Theater and Cunningham Studios; in Toronto at the Winchester St. Theater; at the Cleveland Public Theater, Ohio; the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, FL; the Margaret D'Houbler Theater, Madison, WI and Barking Legs Theater in Chattanooga, TN, among others. She has set dances on students at Niagara County Community College, The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, and the Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater. In 2002, she participated in Deborah Hay's Solo Performance Commissioning Project, and has performed Hay's solo, Beauty, in Chicago, Washington and Michigan.

Teaching has also been an important aspect of Emily's dancing life. Widely known in the Chicago area for her classes in ballet technique, she has worked with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and all levels of experience and enjoys the challenges of helping them to connect with ballet technique as a tool for their own bodies' dancing. She currently serves on the faculty at The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago. Emily is also an experienced Teaching Artist, working in the Chicago Public Schools creating Arts Integrated units to teach children core curriculum through dance. Through Zephyr Dance, Emily has worked with students of all grade levels. She feels that good arts integration is not only an effective way of teaching core subjects from social studies to economics, but is also powerful in introducing students to dance and art-making as a valid, potent and accessible way of communicating and experiencing the world around them. Over the last ten years, she has also been invited to teach professional development workshops for both artists and teachers in Chicago and Elgin, Illinois.
