About the Director
Carol Ann Stowe
Carol Ann Stowe, PhD, is the Director of the Joan and Irving Harris Center for Early Childhood Education. Her areas of expertise include learning and development in context, the education of culturally diverse populations, and the role of art in development.
Dr. Stowe is currently working on two books. The first details the development of the unique, arts-infused teacher education program at Columbia College. The second examines the school as community through an analysis of the life stories of members of a particular school community. She has also worked extensively with Dr. Diana Slaughter-Defoe who holds the Constance Clayton Chair for Urban Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Their work seeks to redefine urban education by advocating that the child must remain at the center of the educational process.
Dr. Stowe has worked as both a teacher and administrator at the preschool through the graduate levels. She began her teaching with preprimary and primary aged children in a multi-age classroom. She has worked with both pre- and in-service teachers for the past fifteen years.
Dr. Stowe earned both her BA in Behavioral Sciences and MSEd in Curriculum and Instruction from National College of Education and her PhD in Educational Processes from Northwestern University School of Education and Social Policy. She and her husband Timothy have three grown daughters.
