Mary Pat Garr

Mary Pat Garr, MA, is Associate Professor in the Education Department at Columbia College Chicago, Director of Elementary Art student teaching, and Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Teaching programs.

Ms. Garr came to Columbia to continue her commitment to improving teaching in public schools by working with teacher candidates who can bring their knowledge, experience, and interest in the arts to urban and urban-suburban classrooms.

Ms. Garr spent several years teaching at K-12 levels in public and private schools in urban communities in Michigan, Illinois, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. She taught all academic content areas, as well as theater, most often at the middle school level. Her main focus was working with English Language Learners and providing and facilitating staff development for faculty. Ms. Garr has also served as a consultant to schools in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

Ms. Garr teaches methods courses in the Education Department. Her research interests include the impact of modeling in a teacher education program on new teacher performance, the value of training in second language acquisition methodologies for urban classroom teachers, and the comparison of online and face-to-face instruction in methods courses.
