Michelle Barreras

Michelle Barreras is a lecturer and the Primary Placement Coordinator for the Early Childhood Education program in the Education Department at Columbia College Chicago, where she also supervises student teachers.

Ms. Barreras, MEd, has been involved in education for more than 20 years. Her professional experience ranges from classroom teacher, mentor teacher, grade level chair, curriculum committee member, and professional conference presenter. While working as a classroom teacher in Winnetka, Illinois, she was engaged in a progressive and constructivist approach to teaching young children. Her study of the Reggio Emilio Approach has influenced her work with young children and adults. In the spring of 2011, she had the opportunity to participate in a Reggio Emilia, Italy study tour in the company of Early Childhood Education certification students and Columbia College colleagues.

Areas of interest for Ms. Barreras include advocacy for young children and teachers. She is a strong proponent of the benefits of play and teaching that are informed by knowledge of child development and learning theories.

On a personal note, Ms. Barreras is the mother of three young children. She is actively involved in her children’s education through a variety of volunteer roles at their school.
