Professional and Pedagogical Knowledge and Skills

One means used by the graduate programs to assess candidates’ professional and pedagogical knowledge and skills are the scores on the Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) test.

The APT test scores show that our graduate teacher candidates can apply the professional and pedagogical knowledge and skills delineated in state standards to facilitate learning.  The graduate elementary candidates showed consistent growth in both total mean scores and in each of the areas, except for the slight decline in assessment in 2005 (although the total mean score did not decrease).  While the graduate art candidates showed sporadic performance each year, their total mean scores as well as their sub scores exceeded the elementary candidates.

The undergraduate program also demonstrates their candidates’ professional and pedagogical knowledge and skills through the scores on the APT. However, only one cohort year is reported due to the small numbers in each of the other cohort years (< 5), so no comparisons were made.
