First Year Writing
Tanya has B.A. from Columbia College, and earned her M.A. at National-Louis University. She began working as a writing consultant in the Columbia College Writing Center during 2000, and has since moved through the ranks, currently serving as the Assistant Director there. In addition to her work in the Writing Center, Tanya has been teaching in the First Year Writing Program since 2003.
Tanya is committed to leading students in linking academic material to life experience, and broadening their understanding of self and others by providing new insights, paradigms, and thoughts. She believes that by motivating students to apply purpose and effort to reach the goal of acquiring knowledge, she can help them live more successfully through life. Much of her teaching philosophy undertakes systematic and sustained learning activities for the purpose of bringing about changes in knowledge, attitudes, values, and skills. It focuses on critical reflection/thinking, experiential learning, multicultural education, and self-directed learning.
Her interests outside of Columbia include playing second base (yes, hardball) on the Chicago Skyline women’s baseball team in the first local women’s league of its kind since the 1940’s. She’s a Sox fan in her spare time. In the off season, she plays guitar with various groups.
