Terence Brunk
Terence Brunk directs the Literature program and is a member of the full-time faculty in the Columbia College English Department, where he teaches classes in composition and literature. He also serves on the committees which help to oversee the Poetry Major/MFA and the Cultural Studies major (the latter offered by the Department of Liberal Education in conjuction with the English Department). He holds a Ph.D. in Literatures in English from Rutgers University, where he also earned his M.A. in English; his B.A. (English and Sociology) is from Drew University.
Terence's research interests span literature and composition. His current projects include writing an article exploring intersections among masculinity, aesthetics, and the visual arts in Matthew Lewis's gothic novel, The Monk, and he is a co-author of Literacies: Reading, Writing, Interpretation, a composition text published by Norton. He regularly presents papers on issues in literature, composition studies, and pedagogy at regional and national conferences.
Terence has a long-standing interest in making technology meaningful for education. He was in the first group of Columbia Technology Fellows, and he has developed a variety of hands-on online activities and web-based applications that emphasize critical inquiry, interpretation, and writing. One such resource, the ongoing Spoon River Project (based upon the anthology by Edgar Lee Masters), has become a popular component of Terence's online Introduction to Literature course and his Introduction to Poetry course.
