Flash Prose

Flash Fiction. Short-Shorts. Mini-memoir. Sudden fiction. Microfiction. Postcard fiction.

Whatever you call it, with the rise of online literary journals, the demand for concise stories has exploded. Below we've listed some online and print journals that emphasize flash prose. Give them a look. Pay attention to what's told and what's only hinted at. You'll be surprised to learn how much you can say in just a few words.

It's also worth noting that typical long-form journals don't always shy away from flash prose. They tend to specify a maximum, but not a minimum, word count, so send them some of your strongest and tiniest stories, even if they don't specify that they're looking for it.

So send it off, already...
The only limit to flash is its length; as long as it's short, all genres are open. Magazines like Brevity focus only on creative-nonfiction; Opium Magazine looks for quick humor; Another Realm is your source for speculative writing served up fast.

And while everybody has his own idea of flash's word-count ceiling, if you can gut-kick a reader in a couple hundred words, you can find a home for it.

Check the publication's website for their exact word count. They max out anywhere from less than 500 words to 2,000, but most ask you to keep it under 750 or 1,000 words. Most of the print journals also have an online presence; they just happen to have found enough change in the couch cushions to afford paper and ink.
