Summer in Florence

Those rumors you have been hearing are true. The Fiction Writing Department is pleased to announce that, along with classes being offered abroad in Prague, a Fiction Seminar class will be offered for the first time in Florence this coming summer. Taught by Randy Albers, this Story Workshop class will be designed to take maximum advantage of the city, home to Dante and many other wonderful writers. It will be open to all interested students. The prerequisites are listed as Prose Forms or Permission of the Department, and students at any level, with a good academic record, may apply to be part of this experience. Talk to Randy or Fiction Writing advisors about course waivers.

More information will be forthcoming, and info sessions will be scheduled early in the spring semester. This preliminary announcement is meant to allow students to begin to plan. The main things you should know right now are as follows:

Dates: June 26 - July 26, 2008

Cost (approx.): $4000, including airfare, registration fee, studio fee, and housing. (Meals and other personal expenses extra.) Also includes walking tours of Florence, visits to museums, and out-of-town excursions still in development.

Friday, April 4: Deadline for course deposit ($1000)
Friday, April 4: Deadline for Housing deposit ($300)
Friday, May 9: Final registration for Summer Session
Friday, May 9: Deadline for Housing payment ($800 - $1000)
Date TBA: Pre-departure orientation
Thursday, June 26: Students arrive in Florence (housing check-in)
Friday, June 27: LdM campus orientation
Monday, June 30: Classes begin
Friday, July 25: Classes end
Saturday, July 26: Housing check out

Summer Registration
March 17  - May 23.

Classes offered: Fiction Seminar, plus courses sponsored by the Art & Design, Photo, and Fashion programs.


Class Meeting Times: Fiction Seminar will meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Credit for Fiction Seminar: Four hours for undergrads, counted toward core requirements for the majors; three credit hours for grads, counted toward the writing component requirement.
