Cinema Slapdown

Come for the film, stay for the fight! Fun. Fractious. Free.

Screenings are held in Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash, 8th Floor
Each screening starts at 7 pm followed by a spirited debate.

Cinema Slapdown’s 2011/12 season ended with a bang…in fact a Big Bang! Our epic battle over Lars von Trier’s end of the world parable Melancholia capped our most eclectic mix yet. After all, where else could you have seen a dancer and a professor do battle over Black Swan, two members of the lesbian community nearly come to blows over The Kids are All Right or two opposing predators take on The Lion King?  And what about the night when we brought in our team of six Slapdown Superstars and handed them the task of taking on Jingle All The Way? Add to these our assaults on the hipper-than-thou spectacles Inception, Scott Pilgrim vs the World and Exit Through the Gift Shop and it’s easy to see why we’re confident that we gave as good as we got.

It makes you wonder what we’ll be up to next.

We’ll tell you…sort of.

Our Fall 2012 theme is...
Quarrels on Wednesday, September 12
Laurels on Tuesday, October 9
Morals on Thursday, November 8

Each of these words describes a different film. For example, Quarrels could be a war film. Or, it could be the story of a family struggle. Then again, maybe it’s a battle of the sexes. LIKE and follow Cinema Slapdown on Facebook to find out what films we’ll screen in the fall.

Our annual surprise Slapdown is scheduled for Monday, December 3

What exactly is Cinema Slapdown?

Cinema Slapdown is a unique screening series already well on its way to cult status. A wildly entertaining crossbreed of film discussion and knockdown, drag out debate, Cinema Slapdown showcases the best and the brightest of Columbia College Chicago’s faculty and local personalities as well as total audience engagement.

At each session of Cinema Slapdown, we screen a well-known though controversial film. It can be anything from a documentary that polarized its audience to a big award winner that left many scratching their heads and asking “Why?”  Following the screening, two debaters fight it out.  One loves it, one hates it, and then they open themselves up to the feelings of the audience.
