Arts, Entertainment & Media Management

The Arts, Entertainment & Media Management Department at Columbia College Chicago offers the Master of Arts Management degree (MAM, 49 hrs.) with six possible areas of focus: Media Management, Music Business, Performing Arts Management, Visual Arts Management, Arts Entrepreneurship & Small Business, and Arts in Youth & Community Development (AYCD).  The Master degree program in Arts, Entertainment & Media Management provides a core curriculum in business and management coordinated with special courses in one of thesix concentrations mentioned below.

The program of study is designed to prepare students with the skills to successfully manage or own an arts-related commercial or non-profit organization; the ability to cope with the technological, political, economic, and societal factors that affect both the aesthetics and the business of the arts, an understanding of the interaction of artists, performers, and writers; managers, agents, producers, promoters, and entrepreneurs; new and traditional media and venues; and the final arbiter, the audience.

The AEMM graduate curriculum reflects the professional experiences of the faculty-working artists-performers or successful managers-executives of the leading arts, entertainment, and media organizations.

Media Management
Students interested in this concentration will combine the business and aesthetic sides of media. The discipline leads to a profession in the businesses of Television, Radio, Film, Journalism, Interactive Media as well as entrepreneurial endeavors.

Music Management
Students interested in the Music Industry should select the Music Business specialty. This specialization leads to professions in the Multi-faceted world of music entertainment. This specialty prepares a student to take advantage of opportunities in label management, talent management, live performance production, as well as hands-on application in music production.

Performing Arts Management
The Arts, Entertainment & Media Management students interested in working on the management side of producing and presenting organizations should select the Performing Arts Management concentration. This specialization leads to professions in legitimate and musical theater, symphonic and chamber orchestras, other music events, opera and dance companies, and concert productions.

Visual Arts Management
This area of study combines the aesthetic and business sides of the visual arts for students who wish to work with artists, curators, scholars, artist representatives and collectors. It prepares students who want to own companies in the visual arts field or who seek management roles in museums, galleries and/or exhibitions.

Arts Entrepreneurship & Small Business
The Arts Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management Concentration prepares creatives/artists for a career as a self-employed artist or as an arts entrepreneur.

Arts in Youth & Community Development (AYCD)
The MAM in AYCD, the first of its kind in the United States, is a joint project between the Office of Community Arts Partnerships and the Department of Arts, Entertainment & Media Management. The program will help build the next generation of leaders in youth arts. The course of study will balance a thorough academic understanding of the youth arts filed with in-depth experience in community-based organizations throughout the course of study. The program will focus on three major areas of professional development; 1) practical skills necessary for operating an organization, 2) theoretical and philosophical aspects of youth development, and 3) understanding the role of the arts in the lives of young people and the way they relate to society at large.
