Checklist: Creative Writing - Fiction
When applying to Creative Writing - Fiction as a domestic student (if you are an international student, please refer to the bottom of the page) you will need to submit the following:
A reasonable background in Literature and the Humanities is desirable. This background should include major period novel courses or the equivalent. Admitted students without this background may be required to take undergraduate Critical Reading and Writing make-up courses, which may be taken concurrently with graduate enrollment.
If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
All application materials must be submitted by the February 1, 2008 deadline.

- $55 application fee: You may send a check or money order to the graduate office or complete the online payment form
If you choose to use the online payment form, please select "Grad Application Fee" and also be sure to include your social security number (if applicable). If possible, you should forward the payment confirmation to the Graduate Office (gradsch@colum.edu). To pay by credit card over the phone, please call 312-344-7260. If you pay by check, money order, or with a credit card over the phone, please note that your payment will take longer to process. - Completed domestic application
- Self-Assessment essay: Be sure to discuss your interest in writing.
- Two letters of recommendation
- Resume
- Two copies of all transcripts from any and all colleges/universities attended
- Work sample: Applicants must submit thirty pages of manuscript in roughly equal amounts of of fiction and expository prose. (The Committee does not accept poetry, plays or screenplays.) For the expository manuscript, you may submit any form of professional writing, although photocopies of essays written for college courses are preferred, if recent. Written work samples are not returned. All written submissions must be typed and double-spaced and two copies of each submission are required.
Please remember: Letters of recommendation should be from individuals familiar with your fiction writing ability and should comment on such. In the case of the MA or the combined MFA/MA, the letters should also comment on your ability and interest in secondary or college teaching.
