Checklist: DMT&C

When applying to our programs in Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling — the MA program, the LABAN Certificate in Movement Analysis, or the Alternate Route Certificate — you will need to submit the following materials:
  • Online Application, with application fee
  • Self-Assessment essay: Within the self-assessment essay, mention any Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling experiences (courses, workshops, etc.) in which you have participated.  Include dates, length of time, instructor, and a brief description.  Also include your interest and background in the behavioral sciences including volunteer work, and discuss reasons for wanting to be a dance/movement therapist.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • An official transcript from any and all colleges/universities attended

Please remember:  A group Dance/Movement Assessment Interview is required as part of the admission process before acceptance into the program is final.  You will be contacted by the Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling Department if they feel your application warrants your attendance at the Movement Assessment Interview. 

Applicants for Fall 2010 may be invited to the Movement Assessment Interview for March 6, 2010.

Students should have some experience in dance (especially modern dance) and some basic coursework in th behavioral sciences.  The following courses are recommended to the successful applicant:

  • General Psychology
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Personality Development
  • Psychophysiology
  • Anatomy
  • Kinesiology

Students without this background will be considered but may be required to make up undergraduate deficiencies as determined by the graduate faculty. 

Applicants are instructed to use the space provided in question #24 on the application form to list any psychology courses, dance classes, or other courses not included on your transcripts.  Be sure to mention the types of dance you have studied, along with the number of years you have studied and the number of classes each week.  If applicable, mention any teaching, performing, or choreography experiences. 

If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
