Dance Movement Therapy & Counseling

The Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling Department at Columbia College Chicago offers two graduate options; the Master of Arts in Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling (MA, 60 hrs.), and the Graduate Laban Certificate in Movement Analysis (GLCMA, Certificate, 18 hrs.).

The Graduate Dance/Movement Therapy Department at Columbia College Chicago is designed to develop quality practitioners in the field of Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling. Program graduates are prepared to work as counselors who use dance/movement as a modality for change and healing. Graduates are able to work both individually and in groups in a variety of mental health treatment settings including schools, hospitals, out-patient programs, nursing homes, community centers and rehabilitation facilities.

Columbia's program in DMT&C is currently one of only five programs nationally approved by the American Dance Therapy Association. Students become a registered dance/movement therapist, D.T.R., upon graduation. Graduates also may be eligible to sit for the Illinois State Licensing Exam to become a Licensed Professional Counselor, L.P.C.

Students entering the program should have a background in the behavioral sciences and dance.  Columbia College Chicago has an excellent Dance department where students may continue developing their skills in a variety of dance forms.

Our faculty members are highly qualified professionals in their fields of expertise, with extensive training in dance/movement therapy, counseling and dance.
