Checklist: Education

When applying to one of Education programs — either the MAT in Art Education or the MAT in Elementary Education — you will need to submit the following:
  • Online application, with application fee.
  • Self-Assessment essay: Within your self-assessment essay, discuss your understanding of the teacher as a creative leader, indicating what this means in terms of interaction with students, colleagues, families and communities beyond the school.  Also include any relevant teaching experience.
  • Two letters of recommendation — Please remember
    All applicants to the Education programs must have the individual writing their letter of recommendation also complete and sign a Supplemental Education Department Evaluation form.  The letter of recommendation and the supplemental form should be submitted to the Graduate Office together. 
  • Resume
  • An official transcript from each and every college attended after high school
  • All MAT student are also required to complete the Illinois Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and receive a passing score.  For questions about the Illinois State Board of Education please contact them at 800-845-8749.  Be sure to include a copy of the Illinois Test of Basic Skills with your supplemental materials.  Students may apply without the ITBS and, if admitted, receive conditional admission requiring them to receive a passing score by the end of the first term.

Additional Requirements for Elementary Education, MAT (K-9)
Those applying for the MAT in Elementary Education are required to have a concentration of 18 undergraduate hours in one discipline, which includes a minimum of 3 courses of upper division work.

Additional Requirements for Art Education, MAT (K-12)
Those applying for the MAT in Art Education are required to have 32 undergraduate hours in visual art.  A work sample may be required.  If required, the graduate department will contact the student directly.

If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
