Checklist: Journalism
When applying to Journalism
as a domestic student (if you are an international student, please
refer to the bottom of the page) you will need to submit the following:
If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
Students entering the program should have journalistic experience, training, or an academic background in print journalism, broadcast journalism or a related field. Those without adequate training may still apply.
All students who are accepted into the Journalism M.A. program are required to complete Foundations of Journalism. The class meets twice a week 9a.m. to 5p.m. for the last three weeks in August and will count for 3 graduate credit hours. Students must pass the course with a "B" or better before the beginning of the graduate program in the fall.
- $55 application fee: You may send a check or money order to the graduate office or complete the online payment form
If you choose to use the online payment form, please select "Grad Application Fee" and also be sure to include your social security number (if applicable). If possible, you should forward the payment confirmation to the Graduate Office (gradsch@colum.edu). To pay by credit card over the phone, please call 312-344-7260. If you pay by check, money order, or with a credit card over the phone, please note that your payment will take longer to process. - Completed domestic application
- Self-Assessment
essay: Within your self-assessment essay, describe your qualifications, what you expect to gain from Columbia's writing based, public affairs reporting program, and your career goals. Please be specific.
- Two letters of recommendation
- Resume
- Two copies of all transcripts from any and all colleges/universities attended
- Work sample: Applicants must submit a representative sampling of published work or other examples of your non-fiction writing. Articles and other journalistic samples are best. Please do not submit poetry, plays, screenplays, or other work of this kind. Written work samples are not returned.
