Music Composition for the Screen
The Music Department at
Columbia College Chicago offers the Master of Fine Arts degree in Music
Composition for the Screen (MFA, 54 hrs).
This program will offer one of the nation's few advanced degrees in music scoring for film, television and other visual media. It is recognized as a genuine point of entry to this highly competitive field. In an industry whose key figures are increasingly culled from post-graduate ranks, composers must be expected to have undergone the same kind of rigorous training as the directors, writers and actors with whom they will collaborate. An interdisciplinary curriculum drawing upon five academic departments (Music, Film/Video, Audio Arts & Acoustics, Theater and Television) will provide instruction and mentoring at the highest professional level, and project-based interaction with students in other areas of the dramatic arts will encourage the cooperative spirit that is the hallmark of great screen composers.
The final semester in Los Angeles will offer students a real-world experience in the creative, technical and business areas of the craft by way of their thesis scores and direct exposure to professionals through industry internships.
In the Fall of 2005, the Semester in LA began its seventh year as the only institution of higher learning permanently located on a studio lot. The program offices and classrooms are located in Bungalow 25 on the CBS Studio Lot in Studio City providing invaluable real-world experience. Students are given Lot ID badges and enter the gates of the lot everyday just like working producers, directors, stars and craft personnel.
This five-week, immersion program provides a unique and intensive educational experience like no other. It is the vital and final part of the graduate program?s curriculum. Understandably, the Semester in LA does have some costs above and beyond a regular semester of study. In addition to the regular cost per credit hour for that term, students are responsible for their own living and transportation arrangements. (While the costs depend on the individual choices made regarding living and travel, estimates include $1,800-$3,000 for room, meal and air.)
As a graduate student in Music Composition for the Screen you will:
- learn from working professionals
- learn on industry-standard equipment
- build a professional portfolio of film scoring samples
The program is designed to allow students to finish within two years (5 semesters plus 2 January terms)
