Checklist: Photography

When applying to Photography as a domestic student (if you are an international student, please refer to the bottom of the page) you will need to submit the following:
  • $55 application fee: You may send a check or money order to the graduate office or complete the online payment form
    If you choose to use the online payment form, please select "Grad Application Fee" and also be sure to include your social security number (if applicable).  If possible, you should forward the payment confirmation to the Graduate Office (gradsch@colum.edu).  To pay by credit card over the phone, please call 312-344-7260.  If you pay by check, money order, or with a credit card over the phone, please note that your payment will take longer to process.
  • Completed domestic application
  • Self-Assessment essay: Please provide an outline of your professional and personal goals and indicate how this degree will help you reach them.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Two copies of all transcripts from any and all colleges/universities attended
  • Work sample:  Applicants must submit a portfolio of twenty slides of original work.  These may be submitted as either analog slides or in digital format (preferred). 
If submitting a CD please send either:
1. Twenty individual jpeg images in a folder labeled with your last and first name (ex: lastname_firstname). Please label the individual images with your last name, first initial and image number (ex: lastname_f01, lastname_f02, etc.) Please format jpeg images so that they are approximately 1000 pixels on the shorter side.

2. A quicktime (.mov) slideshow consisting of twenty slides. Please name your .mov file with your last and first name (ex: lastname_firstname). Please export the .mov slideshow at 720 pixels X 1024 pixels.

Please burn your CD so that it is cross-platform readable. The Graduate Office will return your non-written work sample to you after a decision has been made on your case provided you include an appropriately sized, self-addressed envelope with proper postage and check the appropriate box on the actual graduate application form.
  • Slide ID Sheet: Applicants must submit a slide identification sheet which corresponds to their analog or digital work sample. Please include the following information on your slide identification sheet: Slide Number, Full Name, Title of work, Medium, Dimensions, Date.
Please remember:  Students who do not have an academic background in art or photography will be considered for admission but will most likely be required to make up undergraduate deficiencies in these areas as determined by the graduate faculty. 

If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
