Checklist: Creative Writing - Poetry

When applying to Creative Writing - Poetry as a domestic student (if you are an international student, please refer to the bottom of the page) you will need to submit the following:
  • $55 application fee: You may send a check or money order to the graduate office or complete the online payment form
    If you choose to use the online payment form, please select "Grad Application Fee" and also be sure to include your social security number (if applicable).  If possible, you should forward the payment confirmation to the Graduate Office (gradsch@colum.edu).  To pay by credit card over the phone, please call 312-344-7260.  If you pay by check, money order, or with a credit card over the phone, please note that your payment will take longer to process.
  • Completed domestic application
  • Self-Assessment essay
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Two copies of all transcripts from any and all colleges/universities attended
  • Work sample:  Applicants must submit ten pages of poetry.  A poem may be more than one page however please do not put more than one poem on each page.  The total should equal 10 pages.  Written submissions should be typed and two copies of each submission are needed.
  • Optional:  Application for Graduate Student Leadership:  Students who wish to apply to take the Composition Theory & Praxis course (which, upon successful completion, qualifies you to teach Writing & Rhetoric courses as a Graduate Student Instructor), should include a resume or CV and a one to two page, double spaced essay that addresses the following questions:
  • 1.  Why do you want to become a GSI?
  • 2.  Why do you believe that you are well-suited to be an instructor of writing?
  • 3.  What challenges do you imagine you may face in the classroom?
  • 4.  How might you, at this point, describe your understanding of a productive and healthy student-teacher relationship?

Please remember:  Geographic circumstances permitting, an interview may be required during the admission process.  If an interview is required, the department will contact the student directly.

A reasonable background in the humanities and/or poetry writing is desirable.

If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.

Deadline for Fall 2008:  February 1, 2008
