The Department of Humanities, History, and Social Sciences (HHSS) at Columbia College Chicago cultivates critical and creative thinking skills, allowing students to better develop their oral and written abilities. With an emphasis on helping Columbia students to integrate their experiences and creativity with research and observation, our department encourages students to integrate pragmatic mastery with abstract reasoning.

In addition to a number of challenging and stimulating courses, many of which fulfill LAS Core requirements, HHSS offers a BA in Cultural Studies. Students who pursue this degree receive a vast body of knowledge about our cultural, social, and political worlds.

Our department offers four minors; hosts Intersections and the Cultural Studies Colloquium; publishes the academic journal Cultural Landscapes; provides study abroad opportunities; and is home to more than two-dozen full-time faculty members who are leading scholars in their respective fields.
