Kennedy Receives Scholarship from Legendary Chicago Radio Personality
![]() TaQuoya Kennedy and Richard Steele. | By Morgan Mack TaQuoya Kennedy has spent much time in the air – and it’s paying off for the Columbia College graduate student. From her time traveling the world in the Air Force to her more recent time on the air as a summer intern at WBEZ Chicago Public Radio, this Alabama native has collected a wide variety of experiences that will serve her well in a journalism career. One more thing Kennedy can add to her resume is a scholarship she received in July from legendary Chicago radio veteran Richard Steele. The scholarship started out as an award given to Steele in honor of his 40th year in broadcast journalism, a career that has concentrated largely in radio but also has included television experience. Steele decided to designate the money for exemplary Columbia College journalism students. Nancy Day, chair of the college’s journalism department, recommended Kennedy to Steele as a potential candidate. It was a happy coincidence that Kennedy is a member of the summer 2007 intern team at Chicago Public Radio, where Steele hosts public affairs programming. “I agreed that TaQuoya Kennedy was the ideal candidate for the scholarship. I know she’s going to have a successful career in journalism,” says Steele. Steele presented a $1,000 check to Kennedy on July 24, 2007. “When I found out I received the scholarship I was extremely grateful. I want to continue to lend my voice to the voiceless and I am so grateful to Richard Steele for helping me do that,” says Kennedy. |
