Jaafar Aksikas is Professor of Cultural Studies at Columbia College Chicago, where he teaches a number of core cultural studies and humanities courses. Dr. Aksikas holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Studies from George Mason University. Prior, he earned his Master of Arts in Comparative Cultural Studies from Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco in 1999 and his Bachelor of Arts in English from Chouaib Doukkali University in El Jadida, Morocco in 1997. Immediately after finishing his Master's, he joined the American Language Center of Casablanca, Morocco, where he held the position of ESL Instructor for several years. In 2000, he co-founded the International Institute of English for Business and Communication in Casablanca, Morocco, where he held the position of Director of Studies. Between 2002 and 2005, and in conjunction with his doctoral studies at GMU, he was involved in a number of interdisciplinary initiatives and programs, where he taught and co-taught a variety of general education humanities and cultural studies courses.
Dr. Aksikas pursues research in the following areas: Cultural Studies histories and methodologies; modernity and globalization studies; Marxism and culture; the Frankfurt School; postcolonial studies; North African and Middle Eastern cultural studies and politics; Arab intellectual history; and contemporary cultural theory.
His publications include The Sirah of Antar: An Islamic Interpretation of Arab History (AUI Press, 2002) and his fieldwork project "De attitude van Marokkaanse TV-kigkers op de reklame van de Marokkaanse kanalen” (Cultuur en Imigratie, 1999), and most recently, "Could/Should Cultural Studies be ‘Born Again’? Cultural Studies, Political Economy, and Radical Historicity” (a Chapter in Renewing Cultural Studies: An Anthology, Blackwell, 2008) and "Prisoners of Globalization: Marginality, Community, and the New Informal Economy” (Mediterranean Politics, 2007). His book manuscript Islamic Modernities is currently under review. He has also delivered numerous papers at conferences both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Aksikas is the founding editor of Cultural Landscapes: A Cultural Studies Journal (www.colum.edu/culturallandscapes), which is housed at Columbia College Chicago. He has received a number of awards, including the GMU VISION Award for Academic Excellence (January 2003) and the Moroccan Ministry of Higher Education Merit Scholarship (August 1997). In 2005, and in recognition of his academic and scholarly achievements, he was installed as a member of Phi Beta Delta, Honor Society for International Scholars.
