Rami Gabriel

Rami Gabriel is a professor of psychology in the Liberal Education department at Columbia College Chicago. He holds a PhD and M.A. from the Cognitive and Perceptual Sciences Psychology program at University of California, Santa Barbara and a bachelor’s degree from University of California, Irvine in Psychology with a minor in Comparative Literature. His dissertation is entitled “Affective reactions in a Prosopagnosic patient”, and deals broadly with emotional reactions to unrecognized faces.

His main research interests are: consciousness, non-linguistic thought, and other topics that intersect psychology and philosophy - for example, the differences between conceptions of Mind in the humanities and social sciences.

He currently teaches Self and Identity: Mind–Body Questions, in the future he hopes to offer courses on the psychology of consciousness, and Sigmund Freud’s impact on 20th century art.

Rami is a musician; he plays the oud, guitar and electronics. His favorite styles to play are gypsy jazz, free improvisation, Middle Eastern classical music, rock n’ roll, field recording, and experimental soundscapes. He plays locally and looks forward to further expanding his artistic scope.
