The following ensembles require a Jazz Studies Program Placement Audition:

Jazz Combos
Pop Jazz Fusion*
Jazz Guitar Ensemble**
Latin Jazz Ensemble**
Columbia College Jazz Ensemble

*   Participation required if you are a jazz studies major.
** Audition waived if already authorized by ensemble director.

Auditions for ChicagoVox (vocal jazz ensemble) are held each spring. Students should contact Martez Rucker at mrucker@colum.edu for audition information.

Audition Process:
Students will sign up for placement auditions at the 3rd floor desk of the Music Center. Be sure to do this no later than 12:00 pm on Tuesday, September 3. Depending on your audition results on Tuesday, September 3, you may be asked to come back on Thursday, September 5 to continue the audition process. In some cases, new students may be placed and authorized to register for ensembles after the Tuesday audition.

All students attending the placement auditions will be authorized no later than the end of the day Thursday, September 5. Students are expected to register themselves for the appropriate ensembles. Students will be placed into ensembles by the Director of Jazz Studies, in consultation with the ensemble directors and private lesson faculty.

All students currently enrolled in Jazz Combo and Columbia College Jazz Ensemble will be authorized to register in the spring for the following fall semester. They should register as soon as they are able to and are still required to attend the placement auditions.

What to Prepare:
All auditioning students should bring their instruments. New students will be expected to play the tune "Watermelon Man" during the first round of auditions. Vocalists should prepare one standard in an appropriate key and bring four lead sheets to the audition. All other students should be prepared to play tunes from their most recent Jazz Forum level. If a new student is more advanced, they will be asked to continue auditioning with higher level students until we are able to determine their level. All students will be given a level between 1 and 5 (5 is the highest).
