Recording and Performance Ensemble

Recording and Performance Ensemble (RPE) is the course where it all comes together for the Contemporary, Urban and Popular Music (CUP) program. CUP BMUS Students apply their extensive performing experience gained in their various ensembles, as well as their coursework in theory, arranging and songwriting, into forming professionally shop-able, commercially viable original music projects. These RPE bands are formed in fall semester and last for the entire school year (and sometimes beyond).

RPE bands work closely with student teams from the Music Business program in artist development, creating web and promo materials, licensing, booking industry showcases, music video production and extensive interaction with the Chicago club and music scene. RPE bands perform at the highest-profile campus events and festivals, as well as venues around Chicago.

The bands each undertake a series of recording projects in a full professional studio, working with professional producers, many of whom are drawn from our guest artist program. Past RPE bands have performed, written with and/or been produced by Todd Rundgren, Yoshi Breen, Charlie Sexton, Joan Osborne, Shawn Mullins, Paula Cole, Christian "Krada" Calla and Shele Sondheim, as well as Columbia Music's expert staff of producers.

Please take your time, browse through and listen to the exceptional work that some of these bands have produced over the first few years of the CUP program. We think you'll agree that we have something special going on.
