Scott Hall

Artist-In-Residence: Director of Jazz Studies; trumpet, composer, arranger, producer

Scott Hall has distinguished himself as a trumpeter, composer, arranger, educator, and producer of all things jazz. He serves as Director of Jazz Studies at Columbia College Chicago and is continually engaged in all areas of his musical life. He performs regularly with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and their artistic director Jon Faddis. After many years of service to the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, in 2007 he was appointed as their Education Director. Mr. Hall strongly advocates for arts education through implementing mentorship programs and teaching the history of jazz to students of all ages. Scott currently serves as the President of the International Association for Jazz Education – Illinois Chapter. He founded and has operated Hallway Records, a Chicago-based jazz label, since 1997. 
 
His debut album “Strength In Numbers” received critical acclaim from many of the industry’s finest, including Down Beat magazine, and airplay on jazz radio stations around the world. As a graduate jazz composition major at  DePaul University, Scott received awards from the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences and Down Beat magazine for his work as a jazz arranger. This led him to being an active composer and arranger in the Chicago area. Scott has been working for jazz great Ramsey Lewis as his arranger on many projects for the Ramsey Lewis Trio and collaborators.  
 
Since his student days with Ron Modell and the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble, Scott carries on the tradition of collegiate jazz through directing the Columbia College Jazz Ensemble. The ensemble has performed at the Vicenza Jazz Festival in Italy, Notre Dame Jazz Festival, Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, Jazz Unites, Inc. Duke Ellington Tribute Concert, and many venues around Chicago such as the Jazz Showcase.
 
Mr. Hall has performed and mentored around the world in cities such as Montreal, Rome, New York, Chicago, Beijing, Amsterdam, New Orleans, and Milan. Mr. Hall has been fortunate to perform with many of the finest jazz artists in the world such as Jon Faddis, Mel Torme, Kurt Elling, Benny Carter, Joe Lovano, Lennie Niehaus, Lester Bowie, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Belgrave, Cedar Walton, Dr. Billy Taylor, Johnny Griffin, Ramsey Lewis, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and more.
