Pescara Music Conservatory - Pescara, Italy
The Music Department has a partnership with the Pescara Conservatory that provides exchange opportunities for faculty and students.
Although established many years ago, the exchange program was recently reinstated thanks to the efforts of our International Consultant, Coco Bucci; Music Department Chair, Richard Dunscomb; and Angelo Valori, from the Pescara Conservatory. In additional to the exchange program with the Conservatory, the Music Department also has a relationship with Pescara Jazz Festival, for which the Conservatory Big Band has performed in 2012 and 2013, under the direction of Richard Dunscomb.
In 2012 and 2013, through the exchange program, Columbia College Chicago and the Pescara Conservatory have co-presented a Summer Jazz Camp in Italy. Populated with over 60 Italian jazz musicians each summer, Columbia College Chicago faculty Richard Dunscomb, Scott Hall, Bobbi Wilsyn, Bill Boris, Dan Anderson and Tom Hipskind have provided instruction to camp participants for the past two summer camps. Columbia College Chicago music students have also participated in the camp, and will have the opportunity to again in July 2014, at the third annual Columbia College Chicago/Pescara Conservatory Summer Camp. Dates will be announced soon.
Popakademie - Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Since 2009, the Music Department's Contemporary, Urban and Popular Music (CUP) program has a engaged in an exciting and robust collaboration with the prestigious Popakademie in Mannheim, Germany. Through this partnership, we have established an extended international presence, as the sole US parter in Mu:Zone, a European consortium of over a dozen schools with curricula in Popular Music Performance, Recording, Business and Stagecraft.
Our exchange activities include twice-yearly week-long immersion camps, where students and faculty from Columbia's CUP program spend an intensive week of creating, performing and recording original music with students from PopAkademie and their European partner schools in the Mu:Zone consortium. Columbia reciprocates by inviting PopAkademie students and teachers to our own version of these immersive week-long programs, as well as hosting visiting faculty for regular teaching residencies.
Additionally, our two schools undertake semester-long exchanges, typically with two students from each school switching places for a full semester. Over the last few years, these exchanges have created life-changing experiences and lasting creative and professional partnerships between students and graduates from both institutions.
