Ensemble Audition Dates
• Ensemble auditions begin week before classes and continue through the first week
• Advanced placement in private lessons
Spring auditions for department ensembles are held during the first week of classes. Since students placed in fall ensembles are supposed to remain in the same ensemble in the spring semester, auditions are held only for replacement positions. Check posted fliers for specifics.
If you feel you have the talent and experience to take private lessons but haven’t yet taken the official prerequisites for the course, you must arrange an audition with an area coordinator or private lesson instructor. If you pass the audition, you will receive authorization for advanced placement.
If you schedule an audition but are unable to attend, please cancel your appointment twenty-four hours in advance; if, without notice, you do not show up for your audition, you are prohibited from all performance opportunities for at least one semester.
Concerts
• Sign up for student concerts outside room 333
• Guest artist concerts at 12:00 noon
Student showcases, such as the Student Concert Series, and jam sessions are regularly scheduled throughout the semester. A professional rhythm section is available for accompaniment. Interested students should sign up for performance slots outside room 333. For more information, contact the Music Department’s Production Supervisor, Joe Cerqua.
The department also offers a series of noontime concerts featuring faculty members and other professional musicians, usually from 12:00 - 12:50 P.M. For specifics, consult the department’s Concert Hall brochure or check the Hall’s window displays.
Performance Attire
• Concert black is college and professional standard
Music Department performance attire must adhere to the following professional standards, unless indicated otherwise by your instructor:
Featured singers and instrumentalists must wear business attire: suits, sport coats, shirts (and ties, if appropriate), dark-colored slacks, dresses, gowns, skirts, and blouses.
Bands and ensembles must wear business attire or business casual: suits, slacks, sport coats, shirts (and ties, if appropriate), turtlenecks, pants, skirts, blouses, and dresses. Some ensembles, e.g. Groove Band, may allow a more relaxed dress code.
Stage assistants must dress entirely in black. In this case, jeans and t-shirts are acceptable.
Professional attire also includes appropriate footwear: for men, shined dress shoes; and for women, pumps or dress shoes.
Unsuitable clothing includes the following: wrinkled or un-ironed attire, halter tops, tops or dresses with bare midriffs, inappropriate slits, sweatshirts, plunging necklines, skin-tight or torn garments, clothing with distasteful slogans or logos, and denim, including jeans.
Performance Etiquette
• Don’t distract performers or audience
When attending a performance, do not enter or exit the Concert Hall, or any other performance space, during a musical selection. To prevent distractions for performers and audience members, move into or out of the room between selections. In the Concert Hall, use the rear door to exit.
Performance Participation
• Keep commitments to rehearsals and performances
If you are selected to participate in a department production or event, you are expected to commit fully to all rehearsals and performances, unless the director and producer agree to relieve you from your duties. If you withdraw against their wishes, the department will prohibit your participation in all department performances, except those stipulated by course requirements, for a minimum of one semester.
