Molly Summy

Molly Summy is a senior Radio Major at Columbia College Chicago. Molly can currently be heard on two radio stations, Monday's from 3-7P.M. on WCRX 88.1FM and weekends on WZSR 105.5FM. Molly interned this past summer and wound up getting a paid position after her internship was completed. Kudos for Molly's assistance in making this interview possible.

1.During the interview did you fell confident that this was an internship that would fit your needs as a student? Yes, I was. I was really nervous and was concentrating more on making a good impression, but looking around the office at all the crazy pictures I knew that I would be having a lot of fun that coming summer.

2.The internship started in Promotions. Describe some of the duties that you had? Promotions is a lot of work. As an intern i was doing a lot of Street team work. I'd go to certain events, play a game with our listeners, hand out prizes, sometimes get on stage and entertain a group of people, take pictures, post them on the website. Once a week, i'd go in for office work, which meant i did a lot of paper work and getting ready for the week's events.

3.It's almost unheard of for a student to acquire an On-Air position before the end of their first internship. Can you describe the process of how you were asked to audition? Honestly, I found myself a mentor. I became some what of a "project" for the mid-day jock, who happened to be the Assistant Program Director as well, Jon Hemmer, he saw something in me and decided to give me a shot. He knew i was going to school for on-air talent and I think he wanted to see if I really had what it takes to make in this business. Once he gave me the "audition", i must have made an impression. He and the Program Director talked it over and liked what they heard. Although i obviously needed some tweaking, Jon stayed with me in the studio and helped me until i eventually got it.

4.What class has benefited you the most at Columbia? Honestly, My Radio Broadcast I class with Burt Burdeen. I think that's where i showed most of my growth.

5.Besides your position at Star, you are an on-air personality at the school radio station WCRX. Has working with two entirely different formats had a direct effect regarding your show prep/research? It's actually really cool. WCRX allows me to be free with what i want to do for a radio show. It allows me to be creative and really show a selected audience that this is what I want to bring to radio.

6.For that incoming freshmen, what words of advice would you give them?
Keep Pushing... its almost over...and totally worth all the hard work!
