Musical Theatre Performance Program
Columbia College Chicago celebrates Musical Theatre as an art form. We revel in its rich history and aspire to push its limits. Our students are expected to build a strong foundation of technique and artistry in acting, singing, and dance. We train and inspire our students to identify their strengths, challenges and potential for careers in musical theatre.
Our faculty members do what they teach. Students train with professional actors, writers, directors, choreographers, and designers who work in Chicago, New York, throughout the United States and internationally. They teach from real world experience and provide students with industry connections the moment they walk through the doors. This kind of training, combined with Chicago’s vibrant and innovative theatre scene, builds a foundation that is unparalleled.
The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre/Musical Theatre Concentration offers students fundamental performance training in acting, voice and dance. The BA in Musical Theatre curriculum allows students to choose a minor that complements their major or explore an additional area of study. Students are encouraged to audition for all Theatre Department productions.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre/Musical Theatre Performance Concentration is a selective program offering comprehensive training for those students who wish to pursue professional performance careers. BFA students are required to take advanced courses in acting, voice and dance to achieve the level of performance proficiency expected in the Musical Theatre industry. These students are required to study Advanced Acting Styles, Audition Techniques for the Musical Theatre; additional private voice and dance instruction, keyboard, Accents and Dialects, and are immersed in a year-long capstone class that explores repertoire and refines their multi-disciplinary talents for the real world.
Curious about auditions?
No auditions are required for admission into the BA degree program. All Musical Theatre students begin as BA candidates. The BFA in Theatre/Musical Theatre Performance concentration is a selective, pre-professional degree. Auditions are held each semester for interested students enrolled in at least 32 credit hours. The first opportunity to audition is generally the second semester of the freshman year.
