Monique Maye - AEMM Faculty Monique Maye - Business & Entrepreneurship Assistant Professor - Sports Management

An accomplished woman, Monique has a degree in Political Science, a Masters degree in Sports Management, and a Law degree. But she doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk. Early in her career, Monique played professional basketball in Europe and coached basketball internationally, as well as on the collegiate level. Now, Monique uses her 14 years experience as an agent, and knowledge as the owner of her own marketing company, to give students a one-of-a-kind classroom experience.

Tell us about your company.

Barnes and Maye Marketing provides marketing services for athletes and entertainers. If a client wants to host an event, we help them do so. We’ve put together events such as golf outings, galas, and camps, just to name a few. We also work on endorsement deals and I personally represent WNBA players overseas and in the United States.

Does your professional work influence your classroom work?

Absolutely! What we do in the classroom are things I work on on a daily basis. We cover marketing and promotions, contracts, and legal issues. We also discuss hot topics, topics that are prominent in the sports industry today, such as athletes coming out and race. I took my whole class to go see “42,” the Jackie Robinson story, because race is something that is still dealt with today in sports, especially at the international level. I enjoy doing things like this because I like getting the students out of the classroom. This year we have gone and met with people from the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Cubs. We tour the stadium and meet with people from different departments such as human resources, community relations, and marketing.

Why is it important to do these events?

The classroom truly is a learning laboratory; we often partner with these teams and it’s an excellent chance for students to learn and make mistakes within a safe setting. It is also a great opportunity for students to get their hands dirty and see if this is really what they want to do. On the first day of class I ask every student, “Who do you want to be when you grow up? What is your dream job?” Even if it’s music or photography, students get to see first hand how this relates to them––the first thing you hear when you walk in the stadium is music and during the game you see all the photographers.

What other kind of events do your classes attend?

We volunteer at multiple events throughout the year such as the Hot Chocolate Run, the Shamrock Shuffle, the Chicago Marathon, and the Special Olympics. This gives students the chance to work behind the scenes and really see the foundation of these events. They learn that it’s more than just some people showing up, running, and going home. It’s also a great bonding experience for the class because they have an opportunity to work together in new capacities.

Does the classroom every influence your professional work?

The classroom gives me good insight and food for thought. For example, I am currently working on a paper for the International Sports and Society Journal regarding college athletes getting paid. This has always been a hot topic, so it is interesting to hear the students’ perspective on this. I’ve even had alumni come back and sit in on class to hear the discussion and give their opinion.
