The office of Academic Initiatives is dedicated to the development and support of programming for non-traditional, non-degree seeking students.



Continuing Education 

AP* Summer Institute for the Arts

The AP* Summer Institute for the Arts offers professional development for high school art and music teachers who teach or are interested in teaching Advanced Placement courses. Teachers from all across the country attend this week-long training that includes artist lectures, studio work, and takes advantage of the numerous cultural sites in Chicago.

Youth Programs

Summer Arts Camp

This six-week arts camp, for children in grades 3 through 8, is a rich introduction to the visual, performing and media arts. Subjects covered include painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, singing, dancing, acting, improvisation, and movie making. There are weekly trips to Chicago's museums and theaters, walking tours of the gallery districts, drawing at the Botanical Gardens, and architecture tours.

High School Summer Institute

The High School Summer Institute is an intensive 5-week program for creative high school students that have completed their sophomore, junior, or senior year of study who want to immerse themselves in the visual, media, and communication arts. Students spend the summer exploring their ideas, developing the technical skills that bring their ideas to life, and earning college credit while they’re at it!

Art of Leadership Certificate Program

The Art of Leadership Certificate Program is a series of workshops designed to offer training to Columbia faculty members, department chairs, managers and staff members who have demonstrated a talent for, and/or an interest in, assuming leadership roles within the College.
