Summer Programs
Some academic departments at Columbia have created study abroad programs specific to their concentrations. These programs usually run in the summer and are open to all Columbia students. To find out more about these programs, reference the information below or contact the departments directly.
Fiction Writing Department's Prague Study Abroad Program
Program dates: Session I: May 28 - June 30 Session II: July 2 - August 4.
Possible courses include: Critical Reading and Writing: Contemporary European Writers (55-4208PR); Critical Reading and Writing II: Kafka (55-4214PR); Dreams and Fiction Writing (55-4203PR); Fiction Writing: Advanced (55-4106PR); Prose Forms (55-4104PR); Story & Journal (55-4315PR). New and special courses may also be added.
Spend a life-changing semester abroad in one of Eastern Europe's most vibrant and historic cultural centers. Study the region's literature where it was born. The Fiction Writing Department of Columbia College Chicago is offering two summer sessions in Prague during the summer of 2010. Undergrads will take 4-8 hours of Fiction Writing Department credit; grads will take 3-6. Courses are open to all Columbia students, and can be arranged for students-at-large and students from other institutions.
Seeing and learning about other cultures firsthand is a tremendous asset in today's global business community. Students with international study experience broaden their horizons, literally and literarily, and gain the accompanying personal and marketable advantages in their writing and worldview.
Interested students are encouraged fill out an interest sheet, available at the Fiction Writing Department, 624 S. Michigan, Suite 1200, or at the International Programs Office. The interest form will soon be available on the program Web site as well.

Columbia College Summer in Florence 2010
Program dates: July 1- July 30 , 2010
Possible courses include: TBA November 1, 2009. 6 courses will be offered
Courses are taught by CCC faculty hosted in the facilities of Scuola Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM). The Scuola is located in Florence in ten buildings (totaling 4800 square meters) in the historic city center next to the thriving San Lorenzo market and church, and close to transport facilities. Florence’s unique architectural masterpiece, il Duomo is within a few minutes’ walk. Together, the LdM buildings contain a full range of facilities including numerous classrooms and large specialized art studios, a cafeteria, a courtyard garden, a library, and a computer center.
The main LdM building in Florence is situated on Via Faenza and dates back to the 13th century. It originated as a convent connected to a medieval church, San Jacopo in Campo Corbolini. This church, now deconsecrated was founded in 1206 and for its first hundred years belonged to the Knights Templar.

Marketing Communication Department: Prague, Czech Republic
Program dates: May 27 - June 28, 2010
Course number and name: This six-credit program will count as department or College electives, and satisfies the Global Awareness requirement.
The study abroad program in Prague is five weeks long and is taught by Columbia College faculty. Students will study global marketing issues in Europe, specifically the EU (European Union), and learn to apply basic marketing principles to real life problem solving situations. Students will also have the opportunity to partner with the DRAFTFCB affiliate office in Prague. This six credit program will count as department or College electives, and satisfies the Global Awareness requirement. Register through oasis after acceptance by the Marketing Communication Department Associate Chair, Thomas Hamilton.

J-Sessions
There are an increasing number of January courses (J-Session) that travel to such places as Austria, China, Mexico, and The Dominican Republic. To find out more about these offerings, reference the information below and consult your department or advisor by early October.
Travel Writing: Peru
Program Dates: January 4-22, 2010 (Jan 3-17, 2010 in Peru)
Course number and name: 53-2545J Travel Writing: Peru
Visit the vibrant city of Lima, the colonial and modern capital of Peru. Walk in Cusco, the capital city of the Inca empire. Hike in Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Practice multimedia journalism though writing, photography, video and blogging.
Prerequisites include a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and permission of the instructor. Both instructors are fluent in Spanish and English. There is no language requirement for students.
Cost: In addition to tuition, there is a $1,850 trip fee that includes lodging, activities and transfers while we are in Peru. It does NOT include airfares. You will be required to pay a non-refundable $200 deposit before Nov. 3.

The Spring Semester Study Abroad Program in Cuernavaca is designed so that you can earn up to 18 credits during a ten-week course of study at Kukulcan Educational Community in Cuernavaca, Mexico. You do not need to know Spanish to take part in this Program. Classes in Spanish will be offered from beginner to advanced level. Some classes will be offered in English as well.
Tuition: Enrolled 12-16 credit hours $9,245.00
Each additional credit hour over 16 hours $468.00
Course Fee: $500.00
Tuition includes: Room and Board with a host family 3 meals a day and some excursions.
Students will enjoy beautiful facilities and excellent accommodations, field trips to museums, Frida Kahlo house and Archeological sites.
The semester study is sponsored by the Humanities, History and Social Science Department and the Kukulcan Educational Community in Cuernavaca Mexico.
