Federal financial aid (Title IV, FAFSA) and any private loans, grants, and scholarships are applicable to approved independent study abroad programs; however Columbia College awards cannot be used on approved independent programs. Although some scholarship money may be available within certain departments at Columbia; most scholarships can be found directly through a student's chosen program provider or using independent organizations. Reference the list below to get you started.

Award Name: ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship Description: For the third consecutive year, ThinkSwiss will support 15 talented and motivated U.S. students from all fields of study, who apply for a research project at a Swiss university or research lab. The awardees will receive a monthly stipend of CHF 1,000 (approx. $830) for a period of up to three months. The ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship program takes place within the scope of the ThinkSwiss program. “ThinkSwiss – Brainstorm the future” is a U.S.-wide program on Education, Research and Innovation. It focuses on the exchange of expertise and know–how in academia and the business community in both Switzerland and the USA. Award Name: The Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad Description: Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. As with our faculty grants, GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return – ideally, with multiple audiences and varied media.
