Alicia Berg
Alicia Mazur Berg, Vice President, Campus Environment
Alicia Berg joined Columbia College Chicago in the spring semester of 2004. Berg is charged with creating a coherent, student-centered campus. Her responsibilities include overseeing facilities and operations, developing and managing the college’s construction program, overseeing the space allocation process, supervising campus security, creating a sense of identity for the campus, creating and implementing a campus master plan, and managing real estate transactions to support the growth of the college.
Previously, as Chicago’s top planning and economic development official, Ms. Berg oversaw citywide development activities. Ms. Berg was instrumental in a wide range of projects including the relocation of Boeing’s world headquarters to Chicago, the completion of both the National AIA Honor Award-winning Central Area Plan and the first comprehensive re-write of the Chicago Zoning Ordinance since 1957, and the landmark protection of more than 500 historic buildings including Wrigley Field and the historic Michigan Avenue district. She oversaw the sale of over $80 million of property and the investment of over $250 million of public funds in development projects that leveraged six times that amount in private investment throughout the City of Chicago. She is particularly proud of her involvement in the adaptive reuse of several historic buildings including the Hotel Burnham, the Bloomingdale’s Home Store in Medinah Temple, and a public library branch in the Chicago Bee Building at 35th and State Street.
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Ms. Berg graduated with highest honors from Tufts University. In addition, she holds a masters of science degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago, the American Institute of Certified Planners, and the Lambda Alpha Land Economics Honorary Society. She is President of NeighborSpace and a board member of the Civic Federation, the Urban Land Institute's Chicago District Council, Landmark Illinois, and the Chicago Public Art Group.
