Preparing for Crisis

A college campus is a close community and a trusting community. When an unimaginable event such as the tragic shootings at Northern Illinois University on February 14 occurs, it shakes our sense of safety, and reminds us that no college or university is immune to the risks we face every day in our society. Safety and security must always be a priority.

Counseling Services
At Columbia College Chicago, our preparedness begins with identifying individuals who may need counseling or other support services. Faculty and staff receive specialized training to help them identify students who may be at risk, and to assist students experiencing difficulties. The college has doubled the size of its counseling staff for students this year, and support is readily available. Faculty and staff may access counseling services through the college's Office of Human Resources.

Campus Security
Columbia has a security force of more than 50, with officers stationed in each of our buildings and patrolling the campus. Surveillance systems are also in place. The college has a strong working relationship with local law enforcement agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management and Communication and the Chicago Police Department.

Crisis Communication
If a crisis situation were to develop, we are able to communicate emergency information to students, faculty, and staff through a variety of flexible systems, including phone, email, and text messaging, as well as the college website, recorded telephone messages, and posted signs.
