As exemplified in the free-form improvisational ethos of jazz clubs, the venue of an open stage as a place for self-expression and the exploration of authentic artistic communication is central to the Beat experience.  The folk music revival and singer-songwriter scene of the 1960’s and 70’s (and beyond) descend from the campus poetry reading coffeehouses and jazz clubs frequented by the Beats.   The Beat Kitchen offers an evening of live, acoustic music in an open stage format where performers are encouraged to share an original vision and hone their craft. Hosted by Columbia faculty members Dave Dolak (Science & Math) and George Bailey (English).
