ALL RECYCLING PROGRAMS ARE FOR COLUMBIA COLLEGE USE ONLY!
WE DO NOT ACCEPT CHICAGO RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING.
- Blue for Paper/Cardboard
- Green for Plastic/Aluminum/Glass
Please sort your trash and recycling. When recycled materials are conataminated, they must be thrown out as trash. Show your supportive by being conscious.
WE RECYCLE:

- Books (Hard and Soft cover)
- Folders,
- Cardboard (flattened down)
- Paperboard (klenex boxes, paper rolls, food boxes)
- Plastic Bottles
- Glass bottles (all colors)
- Aluminum and Steel cans
- Aluminum Trays and foil
For Plastics (#1 PET, #2 HDPE, #3 PVC, #4 LPDE, #5 PP, and #7 other), please check the recycling logo and number branded on the each product. There are many types of plastic we can accept for recycling so please check the number.
NUMBER 6 PS (Polystyrene or Styrofoam) is not recyclable.

Battery Recycling
Columbia College
departments and its students use a multitude of battery powered
equipment. The Battery Recycling Program handles theenvironmental
disposal of used batteries.
Dispose of your Nickel, Lead, Lithium, and Alkaline batteries.
All sizes are acceptable: A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt and cell phone batteries.
If you have any industrial sized batteries that cannot fit inside our recycling containers, large 6 volt batteries, or large quantities of batteries, please contact Recycling for a pick-up and removal.Drop off your used batteries in Battery Recycling Tubes on campus. There are drop off centers in the lobbies of:
- 600 S. Michigan,
- 623 S. Wabash,
- 33 E. Congress,
- 1104 S. Wabash,
- 624 S. Michigan,
- 618 S. Michigan,
- 916 S. Wabash,
- 1306 S. Michigan and
- 731 S. Plymouth.
- There is also a collection tube located on the 5th floor Film Cage at 1104 S. Wabash.
Print Cartridge Recycling
Recycle any old ink and toner cartridges such as any:
- Ink and Laser Jet Printer Cartridges
- Ink and Laser Toner Cartridges
Theresa Kerr, the Associate Director of Administrative Services, handles the packing and shipping these materials. Please keep the box they are delivered in so they are easy to track, reship, and pick up. The mailroom staff aids in to coordinate the collection of used items. Leave your used cartridges or boxes out for Mailroom delivery staff to take. Contact Theresa Kerr at tkerr@colum.edu or via ext 7245.
Computer and Electronics Recycling
All old, used, or outdated computer equipment can be taken for recycling.

- Any Peripherals
Our IT Buyer, Georgene Cole has a partnership with Vintage Technologies, an electronics recycler that environmentally handles this type of recycling. Please contact the IT department before removing any parts or placing used equipment in the hallway for trash. IT reuses some of these older machines, so please contact them and they will send someone over to pick up your materials.

Technotrash Recycling
Technotrash includes
- CDs and DVDs with their cases and inserts,
- VHS tapes and their cases,
- jewel cases and inserts,
- floppy disc,
- min discs
- DAT tapes,
- and zip discs.
Specially labeled Techno-trash collection bins are located
- 1104 S. Wabash outside the film cages on floors 4, 5, 6, and 7, and on the third floor
- 33 E. Congress in the audio studio basement, 2nd and 6th floor hallway
- 600 S. Michigan 7th and 14th floor hallway
- 916 S. Wabash 1st floor (by rear multimedia studio)
Dormitory Recycling
Please
sort your recycling accordingly. Keep on top of your recycling so it
doesn’t become out of control. Wash out all containers and bottles. This
will help keep your rooms and the building clean and sanitary. We
appreciate your support.
- 731 S. Plymouth Residence Center, you can find Paper, Glass, Plastic, and Aluminum recycling containers in the garbage storage area on each floor.
- The Buckingham (59 East Van Buren) recycling receptacles are located on the first floor by the back door of the building. There are 2 contianers for paper, 1 for plastic and 1 for bottles.
- University Center can find recycling bins on each floor. Look for marked drop off areas. UC accepts Paper, Plastic, Glass, and Aluminum.
- Dwight Lofts - no information has been provided to us on their recycling program.
Plastic Bag Recycling
We are piloting plastic bag recycling in our dorminories.
Please recycle commercial food grad plastic bags that are a #2 or #4 plastic such as:
- Grocery Bags,
- Food bags (i.e. bread bags),
- Department store bags,
- Newspaper delivery bags.
No zip lock bags, bags food was stored in, garbage bags, saran wrap.
Plastic Bag Recycling bins are located in the lobbies or marked areas in:
- Buckingham,
- University Center,
- 731 Residence Center,
- 2 E. 8th street,
- Dwight Lofts
