Student Publications
Student publications at any college are important instruments of exploration and discovery in writing, designing, and editing. These publications also have a responsibility to join the family of branded materials to tell the reader quickly and clearly that they are associated with and supported by Columbia.
Above, examples of the identity bar incorporated in to the design of Echo Magazine.
To balance both needs, the following criteria are to be applied for all student designed publications:
-
Appearing on the bottom cover should be an "identity bar", which includes the following elements: the "create...change" disc, primary college word mark, college web site address, and tag line: "A Student Publication of Columbia College Chicago." This bar is available in a variety of colors from the official college color palette.
If the front cover prominently utilizes an art piece as the cover image (i.e. a painting or non-commercial photograph not specifically created for the publication) the identity bar can be placed at the bottom of the back cover. This option must be approved by the Director of Creative & Print Services.

A brief boilerplate describing the college is to be included, preferably appearing as part of the masthead:
Columbia College Chicago – an urban institution committed to access, opportunity, and innovative excellence in higher education – provides innovative degree programs in the visual, performing, media and communication arts to 11,500 students in more than 120 undergraduate and graduate concentrations – all within a liberal arts context. Columbia is the largest arts and media college in the nation.
Columbia College Chicago is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The college is accredited as a teacher training institution by the Illinois State Board of Education.

-
If advertising is sold within the publication, a prominent generic institutional ad should appear within the piece. Contact Creative & Printing Services for ads.
-
If the publication is distributed externally, Institutional Advancement should be a resource for a comprehensive data base for that distribution.
- Creative and Print Services or the college's Purchasing Department should be consulted for a list of preferred print vendors prior to awarding any contract. These vendors are approved because they produce quality work, use competitive pricing, and many comply with minority ownership goals set by the administration.
