Capturing the ideals of style, function, and business is no easy task. Working in the modern clothing industry, whether on the design or business side, requires an eye for artistry as well as an understanding of modern consumers.
As a Fashion Studies student, you can take classes ranging from apparel design to fashion illustration to visual merchandising. Since clothing reflects the personality, technology and priorities of our times, you’ll find that these courses play a vital role in preparing one for a range of careers including fashion designer, retail manager, clothing buyer, costume designer, boutique owner, journalist and blogger among others.
Each year Columbia’s Fashion Studies majors participate in various runway events and community partnerships. These include: Fashion Nation, Dress Code (as part of the City of Chicago’s Fashion Focus), Fashion Columbia, and Launch (the student-produced Senior Showcase). These events allow our students to gain real-world experience and show off their talents as artists, organizers, and entrepreneurs.
