Art and Design Courses


Introduction to Graphic Design   
22-0410-41 Monday & Wednesday, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM; 2 credits

Designed to expose students to the wide range of opportunities in graphic design, students will work on projects dealing with corporate identity, brochures, direct mail materials, posters, packaging, and exhibition design. Techniques and materials that are used in graphic design to communicate visual concepts will be explored. Students will be responsible for bringing their own supplies. A supply list will be reviewed on the first day of class.

Fundamentals of Fashion Design

This course introduces students to the study of clothing design as both a practical and fine art: a blending of creativity and functionality. The interrelationship of art forms (sculpture, painting, drawing), design and product development, and manufacturing and merchandising of clothing will be studied. Students will demonstrate the ability to use elements and principles of design in two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, and students will study fabric as a creative medium. Social, historic, and aesthetic influences on fashion design will be explored. Fashion terminology and interpretation will be presented as part of this study. Students will be responsible for bringing their own supplies. A supply list will be reviewed on the first day of class.

Interior Design   
22-0430-41 Monday & Wednesday, 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM; 2 credits

An overview of space-planning design procedures, drafting, rendering, and demonstration of computer-aided drawing techniques necessary to problem-solve and document design ideas will be presented. Field trips are planned to expose students to the Merchandise Mart resources. Pencils and paper will be provided.

Product Design

This course introduces students to the exciting field of Product Design. The product designer’s role is to not only understand how to solve a problem but how to find a form for that new product that is functional, aesthetic, and capable of being manufactured. Students will learn the process of defining problems and solving them through sketching, making quick models, and refining ideas. This course will look at a brief historic overview of product design in addition to focusing on the development of an actual product. Materials will be provided for the work done in the studio.

Fine Art Mixed Media   
22-0440-41 Tuesday & Thursday, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM; 2 credits

Students create sculptural forms using a variety of materials (such as sheet metal, clay, plaster, wax, wood, paper, and plastic) and employ various techniques using the 3-D shops and equipment. Students will be responsible for bringing their own supplies. A supply list will be reviewed on the first day of class.

Introduction to Art and Art History

This art appreciation course utilizes the wide variety of resources available in Chicago museums, parks, and other public spaces. The first two weeks cover the basic components of art. The next three weeks focus on broad themes that will allow students to see how meaning is derived from specific forms and contexts of art. Field trips will be required for all students, and may include the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Oriental Institute, Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park, and other institutions. Students must purchase the textbook Looking at Art, by Laurie Schneider Adams; Prentice Hall, publisher.

Introduction to Contemporary Printing   
22-0450-41 Tuesday & Thursday 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM; 2 credits

Students will master skills, experiment with the medium, and think creatively and critically. The Columbia College print studio and Anchor Graphics offer state-of-the-art printmaking media including current approaches to intaglio, relief and lithographic printing as well as screen printing and digital work. The class will be taught by professional printmaking instructors who tailor the class program to high school students.  Course Fee: $60

Computers for Art   
22-0460-41 Monday & Wednesday, 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM; 2 credits

Students will be introduced to a variety of art techniques by exploring the use of computers as related to art. Current software used in visual art such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop will be explored. In addition, students will gain a basic understanding of computer hardware and use of scanners and digital cameras.
