News Reporting Basics

This course concentrates on developing the skill of crisp, objective writing, as students engage in live reporting. In this introduction to the basic techniques of writing and reporting news, students will learn how to adapt their articles to newspapers and on-line sites and write for a class publication.
Writing for Teen Magazines

A wide array of teen magazines fill the racks and abound on the Internet, covering everything from music and film, to sports and fitness, to fashion and personalities. This course will teach students how to research and write about the issues important to teens in the larger context of magazine publishing.
Television News I: Reporting and Anchoring
53-0820-41 Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM; 2 credits
Students learn the basics of broadcast news gathering, writing, reporting, and anchoring, including an emphasis on interviewing skills, writing formats, and on-camera experience using a teleprompter and newly-acquired newsroom software, in a state-of-the-art journalism lab and TV studio. Students must purchase a reporter’s check list and notebook, and broadcast news handbook.
Hip Hop Culture and Criticism
53-0825-41 Monday & Wednesday, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM; 2 credits
The class will help students develop criticism skills while expanding their knowledge and appreciation of urban culture. Analysis of reviews and essays in local and national publications, along with the textbook, will be used to provide a foundation for hip hop criticism. Students will listen to a CD every week and write reviews and essays on the music that is discussed. A short, final paper analyzing a specific aspect of hip hop culture will be due at the end of the course. Students must purchase the textbooks Droppin’ Science: Critical Essays on Rap Music and Hip Hop Culture and Hip Hop America.
