Television Courses


Creating a Television Program   
40-0301-41 Monday & Wednesday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM; 2 credits
40-0301-42 Monday & Wednesday, 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM; 2 credits


This is an opportunity for students to have hands-on experience in a fully equipped television studio. Students in this class will have a chance to plan, produce, and critique a television program in one of our professionally equipped facilities. Led by a top professional, the class will become acquainted with the operation of studio cameras, video switchers, audio mixers, videotape recorders, lighting equipment, and film chains. Two class sessions will also involve single-camera field production and editing demonstrations.

Writing the TV Sitcom   
40-0201-01 Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM; 2 credits


This course is designed to provide background and experience in the area of sitcom writing for television. Stress is placed on conceptual skills not covered in production classes, with emphasis on idea development, story planning, scripts with dialogue, and silent techniques for dealing with images.


Writing the TV Drama

This introductory scriptwriting class will teach some of the skills needed to write a popular episodic TV drama. The class will require the students to write the first two acts (half of a complete episode) based on a current dramatic television series. The scripts will be read and reviewed in a classic “writer’s table” story conference procedure. In addition, there will be lectures on the writing of both the established hour-long drama as well as writing an original pilot episode.

Advanced Television Production: Field and Editing*   
40-0402-41 Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM; 2 credits Canceled

This advanced course will focus on field production and editing. Assuming basic knowledge in visual aesthetics and production techniques, students will have an opportunity to develop skills shooting “in the field” versus studio production and begin work in post-production techniques. Students will be expected to complete one final project and several smaller exercises on tape.
*Prerequisite: High school television experience required or the successful completion of the basic High School Summer Institute course: Creating a Television Program

Advanced Television Production: AVID Editing*   
40-0403-41 Monday & Wednesday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM; 2 credits

This advanced editing class will be taught using AVID Technologies editing systems. Since the focus of the class will be advanced editing techniques, students, after discussion with the faculty, may choose to shoot new work for this course or come to class with works in progress to be finished in class. At least one small project and one final editing project will be required.

Advanced Television Production: Directing the Webisode   
40-0401-41 Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM; 2 credits
The internet and mobile modes of distribution have created a space for a new form of episodic content: The Webisode. This course will focus on all aspects of directing and production as they pertain specifically to the webisodic series. A mini-webisode series will be produced over the five weeks of the course.
