Annual Report 2007
Some colleges and universities place the arts at the periphery of higher education. They hold the arts in an ambivalent embrace because they understand creative practice to be about feeling and expression, not reason and knowledge.
At Columbia we take a different approach.
We take the entire range of creative expression--from "fine" to "popular" and everything in between--and place it at the center of a liberal arts education and Columbia at the cutting edge of higher education. We balance respect for the enormous value of deductive reason and science with the power of the arts to communicate, to make meaning in the world, to create understanding, and to rise to the social challenges of our time.
