African Americans constituted less than 5% of Columbia’s student population in the 1940s, about 10% in the 1950s, roughly 15% in the mid-1960s, and 22% in 1973. In 1969, Columbia’s freshman class included five African American high school valedictorians.

Columbia opened its first residence hall, at 731 S. Plymouth Ct., in 1993. Today, it continues to house more than 300 students in loft-style apartments.
